Our Automotive blogs are published in cooperation with our friends at Top Speed.

After 30 years in the making, Deutsche Tourenwagon Meisterschaft (DTM) racing is assembling for the first time in August, 2013, in Russia. The DTM series is the German version of our NASCAR. Appearing six months before the inaugural race at Moscow Speedway in Moscow, the German auto maker Audi brought their A5 DTM car for an unveiling.

Mattias Ekstrom a two-time champion of the series, and Edoardo Mortara a two-time winner, presented the Audi A5 DTM at the unveiling. This car is equipped with the latest racing technology for improved handling, stopping, performance, and ride, marking it as the ultimate DTM race car.

The suspension has been fitted for a superior ride and handling, which includes, both front and rear double wishbone independent suspension, a pushrod spring damper unit, and adjustable gas pressure dampers. The Audi sticks to the pavement by Hankook 300-680-18 front and 320-710-18 rear tires wrapped around 18 inch forged aluminum wheels. Stopping power comes from a hydraulic dual circuit brake system companied with light alloy monobloc calipers, with ventilated brake ducts cooling the front and rear carbon-fiber brake discs.

Performance comes from a normally aspirated 4.0-L V-8 with four valves per cylinder. This power plant delivers 460 HP and 370 lb-ft torque, enabling it to bolt from 0 – 60 in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 195 MPH. The engine is matched with a 4-plate clutch, a 6-speed sequential gearbox, and into an adjustable plate-type limited slip differential.  Connecting the transmission to the rear differential is a constant velocity sliding tripod driveshaft and universal joints. Steering is a Servo assisted rack and pinion for quicker turning response.

DTM has been around for thirty years and this will be the first time it has raced in Russia. On August 4, 2013 the cars will thunder around the track in front of journalists and fans alike. During the unveiling and photo shoot of the Audi A5 DTM, Ekstrom and Mortara along with the race car were center stage to Russian race fans, requesting autographs and photos.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport stated, “Complementing the calendar by a race in Moscow marks a decisive step for the DTM. It’s a great opportunity to present ourselves in an important market with an affinity for motorsport.” In 2012, more than 33,500 Audi automobiles were delivered to Russian car buyers, which is a 44 percent increase over the year before. Russia has one of the fastest growing markets of car sales out of Audi’s top ten markets.

This was the first time Mattias Ekstrom has visited Russia and he commented, “The huge enthusiasm we were met with in Moscow is fantastic. I always enjoy getting to know new countries and people. Right after the first day here in Moscow I’m convinced that it has been a very good decision to hold a race here. I can hardly wait to return in August.”

Edoardo Mortara, a two-time winner of the 2012 DTM racing season had this to say, “I don’t know the Moscow Raceway yet but the layout looks interesting and promises a lot of action. I think the spectators can expect quite a bit on track and of course off track as well. I’m very excited about the DTM’s first visit to Russia.”

Elena Smirnova, who is head of Audi Russia, was also exited about DTM’s new relationship with Russia, added, “Motorsport is the best forge of the brand’s technologies. Now, when this kind of sport is on the rise in Russia, when professional race tracks are being built in different regions of the country, Audi is ready to show the new edges of its character. The fans of Audi here are looking forward to the beginning of the DTM series’ new season. They will be able to cheer for our drivers, personally attending the stage at Moscow Raceway for the first time. Russia is one of the top ten markets for Audi, so today, a few months before the championship gets to our country, we are pleased to introduce the Audi A5 DTM to our fans.”
