2014 Saleen 351 Mustang Returns With A Wow!
Having a few of these powerhouse pony cars in my younger years, this sparked a big interest in me. Mustang has always been a fierce competitor in the quest for which muscle car is the fastest, most powerful and, of course, stylish. It has been one of the most popular American sports cars since its inception in 1964. A variety of models have been manufactured coinciding with the pony name like, the Cobra, Mach I, Shelby, GT, and a few newer ones, Roush and Saleen.
The following is brought to you, thanks to our partnership with the great bunch at Top Speed.
Steve Saleen’s namesake is used for this Mustang, who recently regained the Saleen brand.
Steve stated, “Since regaining the Saleen brand, I really want to bring it all together with the heritage that Saleen is known for. With the current Saleen (302) Mustang model it provides all the right features to bring back and update the S351 model.” Since 1984, Steve Saleen has been giving the Mustang performance and style enhancements.
The 2014 Saleen is based on the 2013 model but, as the name states, under the hood is an upgraded 351 engine. In addition to upgrades in both the interior and exterior, the suspension and braking system also received a performance boost.
Production has officially begun on the Saleen, so some details of the beast have been released.
The exterior has been fitted with an aerodynamic kit completely made from carbon fiber. It includes front and side splitters, and F-1 style taillights housed in a new rear diffuser. The hood is equipped with a Butterfly Center Ram Air Induction system to allow cold air through baffles that are designed to open under throttle. Saleen banners and emblems are placed in specific areas on the body with fender and hood chevrons stating the model. An option of a bright work front trim package is also offered.
The suspension is fitted with new S4-specific front and rear springs, front and rear sway bars, and high-durometer pivot bushings. Five spoke alloy wheels are mounted with 275/35ZR20 high-performance rubber on the front and 275/40ZR20 on the rear. A 14-inch ABS braking system with cross drilled front rotors, and four-piston, powder coated calipers, brings this pony to a quick stop.
On the interior, new performance styled seats and a new steering wheel are fitted with two-tone leather and Alcantara. Also covered in leather are the shift boot and knob. The dashboard has an authenticated signature from “Steve Saleen” himself, and “Saleen” emblems are located on the doorsill plates, floor mats and steering wheel.
The engine is fitted with a supercharger and intercooler, giving the 351 V-8 700 hp and 655 lb-ft of torque. All new high performance fuel injectors, air filters, aluminum heads and pistons, valve springs, camshaft, crankshaft, and connecting rods. A new polished stainless steel exhaust and performance mufflers let the engine breathe.
The engine is hooked to a six-speed manual transmission with a close-ratio shifter. Inside the tranny is a high-performance clutch and lightweight flywheel.
The $82,634 price tag for this performance machine may seem a little expensive, but take a test drive and you will find it is well worth the green.
