300: Rise of An Empire -The Art of the Film. Peter Aperlo: Titan Books, 2014.160pp.$34.95.ISBN: 1781167826
On March 7, 2014, 300: Rise of an Empire will hit US theaters. This is the second movie based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel Xerxes, this time centered on the sea battle of Greek General Themistokles against Xerxes and the Persian naval commander, Artemesia.
To celebrate the release of the movie, and the artistry that went into making it a reality, Titan Books has released an oversized, hardback companion book, 300: Rise of an Empire – The Art of the Film, by Peter Aperlo.
With input from director Noam Murro and producer Zack Snyder, the book gives background on the characters, the actors, the production efforts and concept design from Miller’s graphic novel to actual storyboarding for the movie.
The amazing photos in the book are provided by acclaimed photographer Clay Enos of Watchmen Portraits fame. Enos has taken pictures across several decades and several continents, from celebrity photos to movie stills to candid portraits on the streets. Enos’ signature Streetstudio-style is evident in this second collaboration with Zack Snyder to showcase the people who make our movies possible.
The book introduces the characters, with a small character sketch of who each of them are as part of the history of Sparta. (Remember, based on a graphic novel or not, the battles of Thermopylae—from the first movie—and Artemisium—from the second movie, are real.) It also introduces the locations, before, during and after the epic battle.
Titan is also releasing a Limited Edition version of the book that comes with an original print and an exclusive slipcover signed by Snyder and Murro.
