45 Tips To A Healthier Life (Part 1)

As I searched the web for inspiration over what to write my articles, I came across this really great article on health24 that listed the 45 best health tips. I figure we can never have too many articles with health tips, so for a few blogs let’s take a look at these.

1) Copy Your Kitty

And just what does health24 mean by this? Well, the article explains that one super beneficial health tip is to stretch when we first wake up because stretching helps to boost circulation as well as digestion. Additionally, stretching when we first wake can also help ease back pain. An osteopath friend of mine further promotes stretching because it helps the lungs. This is why doing yoga when we first wake up is doubly beneficial.

2) Do Not Skip Breakfast

I know. It’s so easy to get too busy getting ready for work that we miss out on breakfast, but as the article says, “Studies show that eating a proper breakfast is one of the most positive things you can do if you are trying to lose weight.” It gets the digestive tract going, gives energy, and helps to keep our nutrients level. Try some fruit and yogurt or boiled egg and fruit. Combining protein with fruits is a great way to start the day.

3) Brush Up on Hygiene

Specifically, we need to make sure that we brush our teeth properly, and the truth is that most people do not. Three key components are to brush for at least two minutes, floss daily, and meet those regular dental appointments for cleaning and check-ups.

4) Neurobics for The Mind

Neurobics is a term coined by some American researcher to promote exercising the brain. This helps to keep the brain healthy and fight off disease and mental decline. Anything from daily reading to hobbies to brushing our teeth with our other hand helps to trigger healthy brain functions.

5) Get What You Give

Basically this tips reminds us to give to ourselves and be just as kind to ourselves as we are to others. Furthermore, we must allow others to give to us as well.

6) Get Spiritual

Whether that means attending church, meditating, or simply connecting with nature, spirituality helps many.

7) Get Smelly

So even though no one wants onion breath, the more onions, garlic, and leeks we eat, the healthier we will be. These veggies are good for our hearts, circulation, digestive tract, and have even been shown to help fight infection. So don’t be a vampire – eat that garlic!

8) Knock One Back

Just as an apple a day is good for us, so is a glass of red wine. One glass. The antioxidants found in red wine help to protect from free radicals and toxins in the environment. Some studies even show they specifically help to protect against breast cancer.

9) Bone Up Daily

To keep our bones strong and healthy, we need to get at least 200 milligrams of calcium daily either from calcium pills, milk, yogurt, or other calcium-rich foods. Also, don’t forget to combine calcium with magnesium so that the body absorbs it.

10) Berries for Your Belly

The antioxidants in berries provide many benefits including gut health, heart health, and even protection against cancer. Oh, and they taste super yummy!

11) Curry Favor

As the health24 article states, “Hot, spicy foods containing chillies or cayenne pepper trigger endorphins, the feel-good hormones. Endorphins have a powerful, almost narcotic, effect and make you feel good after exercising.”

12) Cut Out Herbs Before Ops

Apparently, some herbal supplements can cause increased bleeding during surgery, but so can medications, which is why surgeons recommend to stop taking all medication – prescribed and homeopathic – at least two weeks before surgery. Additionally, the article recommends informing a surgeon about all meds we take.

13) I Say Tomato

Whether we eat them raw or cooked, whole or in sauce, sliced, diced, or stewed, tomatoes provide many beneficial nutrients including lycopene, vitamin C, quercetin, and many others.

14) Eat Your Stress Away

I know. I know. We hear often not to binge eat when we’re stressed, but we should also make sure to control our blood sugar because low blood sugar contributes to higher stress levels. The article suggests eating regular, small, healthy meals. Focus on fruits and veggies as well as unrefined carbs, nuts, and bananas.

15) Load Up on Vitamin C

The last tip for this first installment is to load up on vitamin C. It boosts energy, helps hydrate, and provides many benefits. We need at least 90 milligrams a day, so enjoy!
