$6 Billion Pickup From General Motors

General Motors has had the new-styled Silverado pickup in development for seven years. It has new features with three engines options that will deliver better fuel economy than the prior versions.

The three engine options available on the 2014 are the high torque 4.3L V-6, an all aluminum 5.3L V-8, the most powerful engine ever offered by Chevrolet, a 6.2L V-8. The 5.3L delivers 383 lb-ft of torque, 355 hp, and gets 16 city and 23 highway fuel economy. Both the 4.3L and the 5.3L engines have active fuel management, which lets the truck run on 4 cylinders when not under a load.

Demand for pickups is on the rise and GM has set forth a new Silverado to compete with the F-Series from Ford, and the Ram from Dodge.

In 2014, GM will have its first public test in Texas. One out of every six full-sized trucks sold in the US, are sold in Texas. The event will take place on a private ranch near San Antonio.

Toyota has a Tundra pickup manufacturing plant in Texas, but sales of the Toyota Tundra have not gone well.

Director of marketing for the Silverado, Maria Rohrer said, “Truck buyers are the most loyal of all. They keep coming back because their fathers and grandfathers drove a Chevy pickup. The same applies to Ford and to Chrysler’s Ram. A bit more than half the buyers of new Silverados will trade in a Chevy truck.”

The use of pickup trucks ranges from family ranches, farms, and small businesses, including construction where more pickups are used than most other types of business.

Within the next few months, the less expensive Silverado model will begin to arrive at dealers. This model will sell for around $23,000, but only about 15 percent of truck buyers will choose this model, which only has two seats. Silverado also has other models with second row seating.

On the other hand, 60 percent of truck buyers will spend in excess of $40,000 for theirs.

Joe Phillippi, who is a former automotive analyst for the Wall Street Journal states that the Silverado will earn “at least five figures” profit per sale. Along with the GMC Sierra, an estimated $5.5 to $6 billion gross profit annually for GM.

The interior of the 2014 Silverado has a heated steering wheel, a ten way power drivers seat that is configurable to the drivers preference, and plenty of storage compartments. There is an available MyLink system which consists of voice command, Bluetooth, a USB port, a 4.2-inch color screen and an eight-inch touch screen.

The Silverado delivers a quieter ride by triple sealed doors. An integrated spoiler on the tailgate and a duel power dome hood offers a truly aerodynamic ride. It comes in a regular cab, double cab, and crew cab which has two bed options, a 6-foot, 6-inch, and a 5-foot, 8-inch.
