A New Era Of Extreme Stunts: Mini Cooper Backflip

If you have ever watched extreme sports with guys and gals doing crazy stunts on skis, skate boards, snowboards, motorcycles and snowmobiles, well, you can now add cars to the list of extreme stunt craziness.

This stunt gives new meaning of “Kids, don’t try this at home”. The stunt was performed by GRAVIT-T team driver, Guerlain Chicherit at the Tignes Ski Resort in the French Alps. The German made Mini Countryman was extremely modified for the stunt.

Another video was released of Chicherit previously attempting the 360 flip in a Mini was recorded, but the landing was not shown. This video was taken early January 2013.

According to the New York Daily News, Chicherit is an extreme sportsman and will be placed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first car backflip using a static ramp. The 34-year-old is a four-time world freestyle skiing champion. He has won the French Rally championship twice and in the Dakar Rally in 2012, 2013, he was part of the X-raid Team having consecutive wins.

Another world record the Mini holds is that in November, 2012, 28 UK gymnasts crammed themselves into the Mini, breaking the previous record of 27 set in 2011.

Reading about this and watching the videos brought me back to when I was younger and of course, like most young boys, we had our own ideas of extreme sports. And yes, we tried them at home, and most of the time it wasn’t pretty. That term extreme sports wasn’t invented yet, but you get where I am going with this.

During the summer we would take a log, cement block, or whatever we could find laying around. Then take a board and build a ramp leading up to it. Peddle our bikes as fast as we could go, hit the ramp and jump a couple feet. Well, we thought it was impressive anyway.

The winter time was a little different. We lived on a large hill and had an enormous amount of snow every year. Would build jumps out of snow for our sleds and, as we got older, jump snow banks with the snowmobiles.

But our childhood stunts pale in comparison to today’s extreme sports and stunts that get world wide attention through television and the internet.

These sports are much more dangerous than the lame stunts we did as kids, and they should be left to the professionals.

Just recently I watched an Extreme Sports competition, and these guys are out of their minds doing the things they do. Backflips while on skis, snowboards, motorcycles, and even snowmobiles. With the release of this video, it wouldn’t surprise me if these competitors start adding car flipping to their agenda; when that happens it will take the term Extreme Sports to a new level.
