A Place For The Family
As I have written about before, I travel quite a bit, especially during the summer months. My summer travels mainly consist of road trips to different locations — namely National Parks, National Forests, rivers, hiking opportunities, and campgrounds — but I also experience other places. I have started my summer travels for this year, and the first place I visited is a lovely location by the name of Black River Lodge. It is located in Lesterville, Missouri, which is in the southwestern part of the state just off of the Black River and tucked in the Ozarks. This is a family-run vacation spot where family-fun is the focus.
My family and extended family have been coming to Black River Lodge since my mother was a child. As a wee girl myself, I enjoyed the place, and now as an adult, I come to be with my family and spend time with extended family as well. Black River Lodge is an affordable and fun vacation spot for families. According to the Black River Lodge website, “For over 60 years we have been in the business of bringing families together. It’s not uncommon to have 3 generations of a family still coming here together. Still sitting around the same table for meals, laughing together at the same talent show thats been going on for over half a century. Where our children are the stars and they get to see their parents act like kids again.” Plus, it is safe. The only people on the premises in addition to the staff are those who are staying at the lodge that week, so it is a place where people do not have to worry too much about danger. Plus, from year to year, the same families attend the same week on a regular basis, so different families get to know and trust each other.
Just what happens here? Well, first of all, let’s talk food. The lodge provides three meals a day at 8am, 12pm, and 5pm. The meals are served family style. Additionally, every day the lodge hosts a different competition in the morning varying from shuffleboard to washers, horseshoes, golf, card games, and more. Plus, the lodge has a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a playground. It also has mini golf, a recreation hall, and an archery range. And let’s not forget the fact that it is located right off of the Black River where guests can float, fish, swim, and enjoy the river beach. Guests can even rent canoes from a local place and enjoy a canoe trip.
At night, families gather to play card games, socialize, and just have fun. Plus, each night the lodge hosts different events. A dance competition for the kids, talent show, bingo, trivia, and a campfire are just a few of the nightly events available.
Guests stay in cabins, each named after a different bird. The cabins have two beds, a dresser, table and chairs, a refrigerator, air conditioning, a full bath, and most also have a fold-out couch bed. Black River Lodge provides towels and sheets and blankets, but guests bring everything else from shampoo and conditioner to hand soap to snacks, games, and other fun. These cabins are a nice way to lodge.
My family members describe the place as a summer camp for adults where children stay, too! To me, though, Black River Lodge is a throwback to safe and quiet family vacations. It allows families to gather and enjoy time together at a completely affordable price. Plus, it is beautiful. Located in the Ozarks, it seems almost like no towns or cities exist for miles, and to some extent that is true.
