A Reason To Celebrate Beer… Now That’s A Holiday!

As redOrbit posted, this past Friday was National Drink Beer day, so in honor of this best of all fun holidays I thought a post about some different types of beers would be nice. I mean, after all, we can’t just drink any ol’ beer. We must honor the beer. So, before you pop that top, let’s look at four tasty pints.

Pilsner—If you’re a fan of Budweiser, then you are a pilsner drinker. This beer is a type of lager originally from Pilsen, now Czech Republic. The Czech love their Pilsners, and now so do many Americans thanks to the likes of Bud and Coors. The light color and taste appeal to many pallets because they are not as heavy. Though they do have some hops for flavoring, they are typically not as potent in the hops flavor as some other types of beer. The pilsner has a nice, light flavor that pairs well with most foods. And if you’re worried about alcohol strength, the pilsner usually weighs in at 4.5%. Did I mention that domestic pilsners (e.g. Bud, Coors, et cetera) are also pretty affordable?

Ales—If the pilsner is a bit too light in color or flavor, then move up to an ale. The combination of the malted barley and the hops creates a burst of taste that tickles the tongue. These beers sit a little heavier on the stomach without being a meal in itself. Ales come in many varieties including brown, pale, scotch, mild, Belgian, and India pale ale. Each beer has its own delicious flavor combination, potency, and color, and each variety of ale goes with different foods. The next time you go to an English pub, order an ale with your fish and chips. Or just experiment in celebration of National Drink Beer Day. No one will know you waited a day.

Stouts—If the type of beer that appeals to you is one that is thick and potent in its flavors, then seek out a stout. These are typically so dark in color that no one can see through them, and they are delicious. This is not an all-night drinking beer, nor is it one to pair with a heavy meal, but it is well worth the calories because of the complexity of taste. Like the ale, many varieties exist: Irish, imperial, porter, milk, oatmeal, coffee, and so many more. Oh, and let’s not forget the blessed chocolate stout. Though these are heavy, the titillation of the roasted malt or barley, hops, water, yeast, and infusion of delicious other flavors makes the stout a nice after dinner treat. The strength of alcohol tends to be higher in stouts, more like 7% although, just like with ales, stouts vary in alcohol content.

Ciders—These tasty little treats are beers made from fruit juice. Yep, a beer from fruit. Though that might sound like they’d be sweet, rest assured that the cider is worth the experimentation. Ciders are light, but flavorful and potent, varying in alcohol content up to 8.5%. Like with ales, ciders are popular in English pubs. If you’re feeling adventurous today, seek out a good hard cider. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

In celebration of such a wonderful holiday, I hope you go out and drink a beer or two. But be responsible in your celebrating. There’s always next year!
