Apple Leaves Developers Wanting More After Just Two Minutes of Intense Action

Apple’s latest WWDC is slated for June 10-14 in San Francisco, California. Tickets went on sale yesterday at 10 am Pacific Standard Time and after two minutes, many Apple developers were left wondering “is that it?” when tickets sold out.

Yes, apparently it only takes Apple two minutes to completely blow their load and reach for a smoke.

Though to be fair, I’m not sure I could last that long with so many people rushing to give me their money, either.

(I’ve filled my daily allotment of euphemisms, right? Can I pull out of this tailspin now?)

We’re still many weeks away from this year’s WWDC but it’s already promising to be quite different from years past.

First, Apple sold 5,000 tickets in two minutes. They’ve had similar problems of selling out of tickets too quickly before. You may remember last year when Apple sold out of WWDC tickets while many of their developers from all over world were in bed. It’s become a bit of a problem.

And while Apple seemed to be doing right by these developers by letting them know yesterday what time tickets would go on sale — another unprecedented move — they also made things worse by letting everyone know when to start refreshing their browsers and storming the gates.

Secondly, Apple uncharacteristically announced in a press release yesterday that they’ll be showing off iOS 7 and the latest version of OS X. These two platforms have been shown off at various WWDC events before, of course, but it’s rare for Apple to announce their plans to show both off several weeks before the event.

“We look forward to gathering at WWDC 2013 with the incredible community of iOS and OS X developers,” said Phil Schiller in Apple’s press release one day before tickets went on sale.

“Our developers have had the most prolific and profitable year ever, and we’re excited to show them the latest advances in software technologies and developer tools to help them create innovative new apps. We can’t wait to get new versions of iOS and OS X into their hands at WWDC.”

A quick glance at the rumor mill says many still expect a new iPhone around this time. This means Apple could announce it during their famed opening keynote that kicks off a week of WWDC festivities, give the developers a week or two to go over the details and prepare their apps and then ship it to the universe.

Seems a little rushed though, no?

In recent years, Apple has also shipped a new Mac OS in the summer time, so this could be a busy June for Apple, developers, and tech press alike.

As it’s been in WWDCs past, attending developers will be able to sit in on technical sessions, get some one-on-one time with Apple engineers, enter their app in the Apple Design Awards and drink each other silly at some of the local watering holes.

It should also be noted that the cost for a ticket to WWDC is $1,599.

It’s all the cost of doing business with Apple, of course, but it should be mentioned that thousands of people threw $1,600 at Apple in under two minutes for the opportunity to hang out in California for a week.
