Asparagus, Gatorade And Other Remedies And Preventions For Hangovers

I am not a professional drinker, but I play one a couple of times a month at the local dive bar. Before I became a writer and CEO I worked in the restaurant industry for about fifteen years. For those that are privy to working in the restaurant and club industry then you already know that industry peeps party hard. So through my experience of past years of partying, and through recent studies I have read, I thought I would share the best ways to prevent and treat a hangover.

I feel preventing the hangover is much better than trying to deal with it. So I want to focus on how to prevent a hangover more than how to treat one. First of all it’s important to realize that you should NOT take any OTC pain medicine like Tylenol or Advil while you are drunk. This is not good for you and honestly doesn’t really help as much as natural preventions for a hangover. Also, do not buy any type of pill advertised to prevent a hangover. Often they have ingredients in them that are harmful to us and usually they don’t work.

As you are getting buzzed, hammered, inebriated, two sheets to the wind, toed up, or in other words, drunk; try to drink water in-between drinks. You don’t have to drink a full glass for each shot you do, as you will be in the bathroom all night urinating if you do this, but having water accessible and drinking it throughout the night is important. Often one of the reasons we feel hung over is because we are dehydrated.

In addition, before you go to sleep drink a full bottle of Gatorade or Smart Water, anything that has electrolytes. Depending how drunk you are you may not remember to do this. So before you leave your place to go party, put a bottle on your nightstand so it’s ready to go, after you take the CAB home since you are too smart to drink and drive.

Before you go out on the town make sure you eat properly and fit asparagus into your dinner. The amino acids and minerals found in asparagus help protect liver cells from toxins, and some studies have shown asparagus to be effective in relieving a hangover as well.

It’s also important to note that smoking while drinking can cause or make a hangover worse. Now this is nearly impossible for a smoker, much less drunk, but it should be noted.

Before you go to bed also have some bread, crackers, or toast; carbs help raise the blood sugar back to normal. This also helps with irritability; when our blood sugar level decreases the liver will produce more glucose from stored carbs. When we are drunk our liver is working overtime metabolizing the alcohol so it can’t produce extra glucose, carbs give your body what it needs thus making you feel better and less grumpy.

Now just as important as the aforementioned is this one as far as preventing a hangover, sleep. Sleep as much as you can. If you don’t sleep much then you will wake up drunk-over which leads to being hung over and nothing is pleasant.

For those that fail to prevent a hangover, as we all do from time to time, there are a few things you can do to help treat one. Now is the time for some Advil and, you guessed it, water/Gatorade. On top of hydrating yourself get some caffeine in you to help wake you up and caffeine helps with headaches as well. In addition you should have a greasy carb filled breakfast.

For those that can legally smoke marijuana or for those that don’t care and smoke it anyways, light it up if you are hung over. Marijuana helps headaches and other symptoms of a hangover.

Do NOT have more alcohol or believe the “hair of the dog that bit you” BS. More alcohol will seem to help at first, as you will feel numb, but you are only prolonging the inevitable. Sooner or later you will have to pay the piper so it’s better to just deal with the current hangover than prolong it. Bottoms up!
