Cadillac CTS-V Coupe: Not Just A Luxury Car, A Race Car As Well

A Cadillac has always been known as one of the most luxurious vehicles in production. The first Cadillac was produced in October 1902 and was powered by a ten horsepower single cylinder engine. The company that built the Cadillac was the Cadillac Automobile Company. This company was then purchased by General Motors (GM) in 1909 and the Cadillac was GM’s default luxury vehicle. The first CTS model was produced in 2003 with a 3.2-L V-6 with 220 hp.

On the racing scene, the CTS-V has been a part of racing since its inception in 2003 with appearances in the Sport Car Club of America World Challenge GT series from 2004 – 2007. During that time the CTS-V earned the Manufacturer’s championship in both 2005 and 2007.

The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe will be used in the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge Series as it was in 2012. The competition for the Cadillac will be Audi, Mercedes, Aston Martin, and BMW. Andy Pilgrim, the driver of one of the two CTS-Vs who finished second in GT points in 2012, says that even though the cars were only tested for two days he is confident it would do great this year.

In 2012, team Cadillac won the Pirelli World Challenge GT Driver’s Championship, with Johnny O’Connell. Both Johnny and Andy are anxious to keep the CTS-Vs at the front again this year. Team Cadillac won four races in 2012, St. Petersburg Grand Prix, Long Beach, two at the Belle Isle Circuit in Detroit.

“When I look back at how we won the championship, it was never due to speed,” Johnny said at a press release. “We won it by being consistent and staying out of trouble. Between Andy and me, we only had one fast lap, which lead to us getting the pole at Detroit.”

“My expectations for this season are realistic. We had a landmark season in 2012 taking it all as a team and one-two for drivers,” Andy said. “I think race by race and corner by corner we’ll see how it shakes out. As long as we are competitive, I know we’ll be up front and be in with a chance and that’s all we can ask for. The goal will be to repeat 2012 and that feels pretty good being able to say that. Having done it once, we feel we can do it again.”

John Kraemer, V-Series Racing marketing manager said, “We have the target firmly planted on our rear bumper heading into the 2013 Pirelli World Challenge Series. The team at Pratt & Miller has worked all off-season to keep the CTS-V Coupes at the front. We will have fresh competitors from Germany, but we are equal to the task of repeating. Off the track, Team Cadillac has developed a following based upon providing a great track experience.”

The 6.2-L supercharged V-8 engine in the production model delivers 556 hp with 551 pound-feet of torque. Obviously, the race version will produce higher numbers.
