Did Sony Just Kill The Point And Shoot Camera?
Well, well guys, look how things have changed in the past few weeks. All of a sudden, we live in a time where anyone with a spare Benjamin Franklin in their pocket can finally have an iPhone (in cutesy, Hello Kitty type colors). Okay, I’m not going to poke too much fun at the iPhone 5c, but just before the world went crazy over the iPhone 5 (and whatever alphabet that Apple sees fit), Sony (yes, the company that makes PlayStation) announced a new innovation that may be an even bigger surprise than the Hello Kitty iPhone.
Recently, Sony has announced camera lenses for iOS and Android devices. This has been done before, but what makes this effort different from the rest?
Variety, that’s what.
So dig this: you get two models to choose from, which are a $249 lens and $500 lens. The lesser model sports an impressive 18.2 megapixels, 10x optical zoom and only weighs about four ounces. The standout of the two, dubbed the DSC-QX100, sports about 20.2 megapixels and also shares the exact same sensor as the Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 II camera (which is a compact system camera, by the way). This makes for a pretty bad ass mobile shoot.
So, if you basically have a baby DSLR connected to your smartphone with all the bells and whistles to even make those pictures you take of restaurant food look like something worth viewing, then I guess the burning question now is how all of this supposed to work together?
Technically, it has been explained that using their PlayMemories app, the cameras latch on to the phone or tablet and then wirelessly connect to send a live feed from the lenses to the device (which more than likely is through Bluetooth). After the connection is set up, you are free to go on the mobile photo shoot or video shoot of a lifetime.
Funnily enough, the most surprising factor about all of this is not the announcement itself, but the fact that it is available for use on all mobile devices that run the current updates of Android and iOS. I mean, they could’ve locked all of these cool features up in a huge ad campaign that would’ve assured Sony a spot in the ongoing smartphone war.
Either way it goes, we know two things if this actually catches on; Instagram is going to get a batch of cinematic goodness and the point-and-shoot camera will finally rest in peace. Speaking of which, if this actually catches on then, I’m sure Apple and Samsung will be just over the horizon ready to flood the market with their versions of this not so new idea, but very innovative concept. Hey, I guess it is just the nature of business.
And when the vultures of this supply and demand economics come for you Sony, you can have the last laugh knowing that you guys innovated in big way.
