Dude! Don’t Bogart The Pizza!
Pizza has to be one of my favorite food groups. I love it, and will eat pizza nearly anywhere; from little Mom-n-Pop places on my travels to multinational chains. I love pizza.
But all pizza is made basically the same way, right? Some dough, a little sauce, veggies, meats and cheese. The ingredients may vary a little, but the basic recipe is the same.
Unless, of course, you live in Vancouver, Canada. CBC News reports that Mega iLL has a special, extra, ingredient for their pizza—if you are over 18 and have a prescription for medical marijuana, that is.
“Basically we infuse it through an oil extraction process, where we drizzle the oil onto the pizza and it medicates you when you eat it. It’s a little different effect from smoking it. It takes maybe about a half hour for it to activate,” said Anthony Risling of Mega iLL.
A body high from eating THC is much different from the “head high” of smoking. The Weed Blog explains, ” Eating marijuana affects you differently than smoking it, so walk before you run is the moral of this story. When you eat marijuana, it goes into your blood stream, compared to when you smoke marijuana and it goes into your nervous system. When you eat it, the high lasts longer, and takes longer to take effect. When you smoke marijuana, the high is almost instant, but doesn’t last as long as when you eat marijuana.”
The extra spice only costs you $10 dollars over the purchase price of a regular pie, and has “a little bit of a tangy flavor,” according to a customer at Mega iLL.
Risling is fairly certain they are running the only “pot-zzeria” in Canada. He got the idea during a trip to Cambodia. There he sampled a THC-infused pizza at a pizzeria called Happy Pizza. Which is, I think, the PERFECT name.
There are some new Health Canada rules on medical marijuana coming into affect this month that might change things for Mega iLL. Those rules might take pizza medication off the menu, but it’s still a wait and see game.
“We’ll still be open regardless. We just might not be able to infuse the pizzas anymore,” Risling said. “But we will still be open as a pizza place where people can come and medicate here.”
Mega iLL’s Facebook page shows they are also a vapor lounge, where you can indulge your need for medication, even if the pizza is off the menu.
