Ford F-150 Going Propane In 2014
What do we think of when the word propane is mentioned? Usually gas grills, stoves and heating your home come to mind. But now, the 2014 Ford F-150 will offer liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel options.

The 3.7-liter V-6 engine in the truck will be modified with a gaseous-fuel prep package containing hardened valves, valve seats, pistons, and rings, to handle the extra heat generated by the fuel. It will cost an additional $315 to have the package installed. However, this fuel option won’t come from the factory; instead, the customer will take the truck with the modified engine to a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier for the installation of the fuel system.
The conversion cost is estimated to be between $7,500 and $9,500, depending on the size of fuel tank installed. You might be thinking, wow that’s expensive! But figure the current price per gallon of gas at around $3.67, compared to the average price of CNG at $2.11, and even in some areas it’s around $1; it will pay for itself very quickly.
Ford has estimated the F-150 will go up to 750 miles on a tank of CNG. I have had two F-150s and the most I ever could muster is around 325; quite a difference. With this option, the F-150 will be the only half-ton pickup capable of using CNG or LPG for fuel. Ford plans on making the conversion on eight more commercial vehicles within the next year.

In a press release, Jon Coleman, Ford’s fleet sustainability and technology manager said, “Businesses and fleet customers have been asking Ford to make F-150 available with CNG capability to take advantage of the fuel’s low price and clean emissions. With the money saved using CNG, customers could start to see payback on their investment in as little as 24 to 36 months.”
The specifications and performance of the F-150’s conversion to the new fuel have not been released as of yet.
Since 2009, Ford has had this option on the larger trucks, and has the honor of being the leader in CNG and LPG prepped sales. This year more than 15,000 will be sold; that is 25 percent more than 2012.
AT&T recently purchased 650 F-350 trucks with the CNG option. “We’re almost halfway to our company-wide goal of deploying 15,000 alternative-fuel vehicles by the end of year 2018,” said Jerome Webber, AT&T vice president, global fleet operations. “Vehicles such as CNG F-350s from Ford have helped us avoid purchasing 7.7 million gallons of gasoline over the past five years while reducing our fleet’s emissions.”
The compressed gas has a pressure of approximately 3,600 psi and is composed of mainly methane. In the US, about 85 percent of all CNG used is produced domestically. It burns cleaner and has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency to have up to 30 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.
