Ford Has Done It Again: F-Series Is #1

Back in May 2013, Ford sold its 33-millionth F-Series truck in Plano, Texas, according to Autoguide. The buyer of the F-150 Platinum was long-time customer Sam Loria, who purchased his first Ford truck back in 1969 and with the new F-150, it was the 12th Ford he has owned.

As of the time purchase, he unknowingly assisted in Ford’s best May sales of Ford Trucks in seven years, with a total of 71,604 sold that month, and 299,477 sold since January 1. These figures bolted Ford on its way to a 37th consecutive year running as the country’s best selling truck.

The figures have been released and once again the Ford F-Series leads in total sales. Top Speed states that 763,402 total F-Series trucks were sold in 2013, up 18,086 from 2012. That figure is almost double of the second place Chevrolet Silverado with 480,414 trucks sold.

The best-selling car was the Toyota Camry with 408,000 vehicles sold, making the F-Series not only the best-selling truck, but also the best-selling vehicle of 2013.

Auto News posted that Ford’s three biggest sellers were the F-Series, Escapes and Fusions, totaling 1.4 million in sales which equaled more than 50 percent of total sales. In 2013, Ford’s market share rose a half a point and sales rose 11 percent. It was the only brand to top 2 million total vehicles sold.

Ford stated that if all the F-Series trucks sold in 2013 were to line up end-to-end, there would be more than enough trucks to reach from New York to Los Angeles.

An owner of two Ford dealerships in Colorado, Jeff Carlson is pleased with the figures. He stated, “dealers are looking at record profits, which are good, and so is the manufacturer. “It’s like the old ‘A-Team': ‘I love it when a plan comes together.’ We all are pretty happy this year.”

Ford isn’t the only vehicle manufacturer that earned higher sales in 2013. The auto industry’s overall sales increased by eight percent, with 15.6 million vehicles sold. Not since 2007 has the industry seen such good numbers.

Although it was a year for high vehicle sales, December saw the sale of fewer than expected vehicles the last week of the year. It normally shows an increase from end of year sales and big promotions. But analysts say that snow storms may have kept some people away from the dealerships.

“December is one of those months that’s very heavily back-end loaded, and that final push in the last week and a half of the month wasn’t quite as strong as we anticipated. Perhaps some of those consumers that may have purchased at the end of the year already pulled the trigger in the last couple of months because there were so many deals out there,” said senior market analyst for Kelley Blue Book, Alec Gutierrez.

Manufacturers who dropped in December sales from last year include, General Motors, Toyota Motor Sales US, Hyundai-Kia Automotive, and Volkswagen.

Other manufactures besides Ford that had increased sales were, Nissan North America selling 1.2 million vehicles and Subaru had a ten percent gain.
