Happy Geek Pride Day 2014

Today, May 25th, 2014 is the 10th annual Geek Pride Day.

The celebration started in Spain in 2006, according to GeekHolidays, with the slogan “whoever is not geek, raise your lightsaber.” Why a lightsaber? Because May 25, 1977 was the original release date of Star Wars: A New Hope. The day was first celebrated in the US in 2008.

The organizers of the original Spanish celebration, who wanted to take the sting out of the word “geek” and celebrate differences, created a list of geek rights and responsibilities:

The right to be even geekier.
The right to not leave your house.
The right to not like football or any other sport.
The right to associate with other nerds.
The right to have few friends (or none at all).
The right to have as many geeky friends as you want.
The right to be out of style.
The right to be overweight and near-sighted.
The right to show off your geekiness.
The right to take over the world.

Be a geek, no matter what.
Try to be nerdier than anyone else.
If there is a discussion about something geeky, you must give your opinion.
To save and protect all geeky material.
Do everything you can to show off geeky stuff as a “museum of geekiness.”
Don’t be a generalized geek. You must specialize in something.
Attend every nerdy movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else.
Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better.
Don’t waste your time on anything not related to geekdom.
Try to take over the world!

ThinkGeek reminds us, however, that May 25th is not just opening day for Star Wars, but is also a day of celebration for several other types of geeks as well.

Towel Day: the day, two weeks after the anniversary of Douglas Adams’ death, when hoopy froods keep their towels handy, just in case.

Glorious May 25: A day of remembrance in Terry Prachett’s Discworld (much like Remembrance Day in Canada, but without the poppies). People celebrate by wearing lilacs and carrying hard-boiled eggs.

How bad is it to be a geek these days? ABC reports that Modis, a global IT staffing and recruiting service, conducted a survey to find out.

The results show that 68 percent of participants said they would date a geek. This might be related to the fact that 67 percent said that geeks are “loyal.” The survey also found that 90 percent would be proud to show off their geek books and comics, with another 65 percent willing to show off their toys and PJs.

Geeks are a good bet for employment too. Modis found that 70 percent who self-identified as geeks are employed, while only 54 percent of non-geeks are.

Modis also partnered with “super geeks” Linus Sebastian (LinusTechTips) and Chris Pirillo (Pirillo) to create a list of the top 10 cutting edge products that geeks around the globe are excited about.

  1. Virtual Reality
  2. 3D Printing
  3. Smart Watches
  4. Steam Machines
  5. 4K TVs
  6. Smart Glasses
  7. Drones
  8. Home Automation
  9. Health Tech
  10. Next Generation Cameras

The Perks of Being a Geek:

There are perks for being a geek this year.

ThinkGeek has designed a pin that they are including with any order shipped after May 9 until they run out. The pin has a really nice geeky design on the front… and a code on the back that will give you a discount of $10, $20, or $30 dollars on your next order of $75 or more through 6/15/14. They are also running a photo contest on their Facebook page on May 25th.

Modis is also having a giveaway. The 3rd annual Geekstakes is from May 23rd to June 6th. Every weekday, Modis will be giving away some of those fantastic toys. You can enter once a day, so it’s really worth checking out.

Personally, I don’t think any celebration of geek-dom could possibly be complete without Felicia Day and The Guild. The song I’m The One That’s Cool is two years old, but it still totally rocks.

I walk around singing the chorus to this song quite often; it should be the anthem of every geek in the world. It should definitely be the anthem for Geek Pride Day!

To all the ass-hat jocks who beat me up in school
Now I’m the one that’s cool
I’m the one that’s cool
To all the prom queen bitches thinking they still rule
Now I’m the one that’s cool
I’m the one that’s cool
