Holiday Treats – Without The Sweets

Whether you have diabetes or just want to watch what you (and your kids) eat this Easter holiday, there are many different “sweet treats” that won’t raise your blood sugar or your weight! But Easter isn’t just about sugary candy.

First, let’s talk about what goes into the traditional basket. In my house, the kids each get their own basket and we have one adult basket. But with a diabetic husband and one kid who is hyperactive, sugar is NOT a staple in our basket of goodies. With kids, it’s pretty simple to fill a basket with stuffed animals, books, toys, gift cards and clothes. This works for the teen and the pre-teen, both of who are big on snacks and sweets. I do allow them one (and only one) type of regular, sugar-laden candy – to be doled out by yours truly, of course. Other treats might include protein bars, granola bars, and bags of mixed nuts. There are also the traditional hard-boiled eggs in all of the baskets, which are great protein treats. We all like them, so we make lots and they last only a few days. And there are plenty of “sugar-free” options for candy these days, if you are really craving some. Just remember that too much of anything is bad for you, so moderation is still important.

The biggest part of the day for us is having dinner with the entire extended family. This means tons for food, fun, and laughter with everyone. The main part of the meal is always a gigantic ham. Ham is a great food for diabetics. Low in fat and carbs and high in protein, it’s almost the perfect diabetic food. Side dishes are where we tend to have problems. Instead of the more traditional green bean casserole, try having green beans with almonds and garlic. Another one we love is some kind of pasta salad. For the pasta salad, simply use carb-friendly pasta and watch your portions. The best thing about pasta salad is you can put anything in it! Load yours up with raw veggies, drained and rinsed kidney or black beans and some low-fat Italian dressing – YUM! With this, you are only limited by your imagination!

Finally, its time for dessert. And it’s not as bad as you think. There are tons and tons of diabetic-friendly desserts you can find on the Internet. Since I am a lover of citrus, I will be trying Low-Carb Lemon Cheesecake Bars. However, my husband loves chocolate, so for him I’m making Coffee-Chocolate Marble Cake. That ought to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth!

Remember, being diabetic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy all the good food you have come to associate with the holidays. It just means you have to find alternatives. And some of those alternatives are looking pretty damn good!
