Keep Your Influence In The Palm Of Your Hands
Do you blog, own a business, or just want to measure your online influence? Ever wanted to know how you stack up to other people in your industry or field of interest online?
There’s an app for that.
The app that measures a users’ online presence, Klout, is now available for iOS and Android users, and is probably soon to be the next big thing.
It’s kind of a mixture of Pinterest, and Twitter, without actually being about expression. That’s just my take on it, I’m sure Joe Fernandez, CEO and founder, would ardently disagree, but hey, I’m the one writing the blog here.
According to their website, Klout started with a simple premise: “Everyone has influence—the ability to drive action. Klout built on this idea to show anyone how he or she can influence the world and its future.”
Influence had long been in the hands of powerful people like government officials, movie stars, and sports players, but with social media’s infinite popularity, now any one has that influential power.
The makers of Klout recognized that potential, and designed an algorithm to help measure it.
Klout is a data app of sorts that provides the user with a score, a number between one and one hundred, which directly reflects the user’s social media influence. “The science behind the Score examines more than 400 variables on multiple social networks beyond your number of followers and friends. It looks at who is engaging with your content and who they are sharing it with.”
In other words, some scientists and math geniuses met up with some social networking gurus and this is their brainchild.
Your friends, followers, and folks who just happen to stumble upon your enlightening thoughts give you a K+ to show that they agree, or were influenced, by your post.
Klout has a few features to help you visualize your influence. Moments show you the post that you made that was influential and improved your Klout score. Topics show you what you’re interested in, and make suggestions on other content that aligns with your expertise or passion, and gears them towards helping you make the most impact.
There are also perks from industry leaders that are available to Klout users making the biggest impression. “Klout is the only social marketing tool that allows you to impact every major social network in one step. Powered by Klout Perks, businesses can reach relevant top influencers with products or experiences that drive awareness and favorability about your business.”
It’s a popularity contest more or less, but less of a competition against others, and more of one against yourself. Sort of like the individual sport of social networking. In golf you try and beat your own score, in swimming, biking, or marathon running, you try and beat your own time. Many of us continue to test ourselves in terms of online influence, and Klout helps you accurately measure yourself.
Sounds pretty neat to me; check it out for yourself.
