Letting The Psycho Loose: New Vault Hunter In Borderlands 2
It’s been a couple of months since we have heard from the world of Pandora. After the defeat of the infamous Handsome Jack and other villainous fiends, we thought it was over. Well, now the vault hunters are back for a new adventure and, better yet, a brand new character joins the team.
Now, for those of you who are not as familiar with this game, Borderlands 2 is a multi-platform role-playing first person shooter set in the barren and primal world of Pandora. The story is set around a group of protagonists called vault hunters. The four main ones you start off with are Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker, and Zer0 (it actually is spelled with a zero, it’s not a typo.) the Assassin. Last October, Gaige the Mechromancer, joined the fight for Pandora. And now this past Tuesday, Gearbox Software released their newest playable character to the public, Kreig the Psycho Bandit, bringing the updated count to six.
When creating this new protagonist, Borderlands 2 developers though it would a great idea to throw an anti-hero in the struggle. Krieg is a former member of the bandits, an enemy group who Borderlands enthusiasts clocked many hours putting slugs into. Every inch of his skills, from constantly getting set on fire, to the vivid explosion from blowing themselves up, have been jam packed into a fun, psychotic, maniac experience.
Kreig’s skill tree is separated into Hellborn, Mania, and Bloodlust. The first is all about elemental effects, mainly about getting yourself set on fire. Mania, is about taking damage, melee attacks, and your “fight for your life” mode. For those gun specialists, Bloodlust is all about ranged attacks and gun customizations. His special skill follows his fellow psycho brethren’s footsteps, with Blood Axe Rampage.
It’s mainly a melee skill, where Kreig draws his axe, and you hack, slash, and throw it around causing massive damage to enemies. A plus from this skill is that with each kill you regain all your health. This back and forth of life and near death has new users sitting at the edge of their seats.
The biggest and most innovative new feature the Psycho Bandit has to offer is called “Light the Fuse”, his “Fight for Your Life” mode. When downed, instead of being crouched and pulling out your guns, Krieg pulls out dynamite, and goes around chunking sticks until he goes and finally blows himself sky high to get a kill. This is the first time Gearbox ever has added to this part of the game.
Kreig the Psycho Bandit is out for all platforms. The pack costs $9.99 on Steam and PlayStation Network, and 800 points on Xbox Live Marketplace. Unfortunately, if you have already bought a season pass for the game, his DLC is not under it , so you will have to buy it separately. Personally, I think it is money well spent and is a great addition to the Borderlands series. Can’t wait to see what’s out next.
