Listen To Bass Drum Of Death

Welcome to Bands You Should Be Listening To. My goal here is to bring an artist to your attention, whether you’ve heard of them or not, and convince you to give them a listen. My hope is that you end up finding some tunes that you love! Let’s get started.

With a name like Bass Drum of Death, you might expect this group from Mississippi to serve up some serious death rock, or music wrought with guitar chugs and screams. But Bass Drum of death is actually something quicker, more immediate, and yes, cleaner. The intensity and the emotion behind this music might be something on par with what a metal group could offer, and perhaps even more so.

Crawling After You and White Fright, both cuts from the band’s latest self-titled release, feature a chorus and refrain that have just the right feeling to catch in your head. These moments are when the band is most effective, and their ideas come across the clearest.

Shattered Me is the epitome of this group. It’s fast and rolling, clocking in at just over two minutes in length. Shattered Me makes its impact and then gets quickly out of the picture, almost before you notice it. That’s what’s so interesting about this group. Sometimes you don’t really notice their quality, and their intricacy, until you listen a few times. Then, you fall in love.

One of my favorite things about this band is that their music sometimes doesn’t have that much complexity to it. We talk a lot about music that’s so complex it’s impossible to understand its genius. From Beethoven to Radiohead, after 100 listens, you still don’t get everything that’s being expressed. But with Bass Drum of Death, sometimes they’re just angry. Sometimes they’re scared, and sometimes they just want to party. Sure, it could be a mix of those things too, or perhaps an emotion a little bit harder to convey. But you don’t always have to dig through ten listens to find the pot of inspirational gold. You can just live, and breathe, and feel alongside these guys. Let loose, sit back, and let the simplest of your feelings come rushing out. Listen to Bass Drum of Death, and just jam out.

So if this style of music — hard, grating, and rough — is something you enjoy, you need look no further than this band. Right now, Bass Drum of Death is probably one of the best and most stable figures in this genre. And with their conscientious attitude and hard-working approach, they only stand to improve from here. I guarantee if you give it enough time, you’ll enjoy what you hear. And you’ll begin to feel exactly what Bass Drum of Death is feeling.
