Mary Jane Keeps Fallin’ On My Head
That is upwards of $157,000 worth of pot.
That is a lot of green.
Here is how it went down.
“An ultra-light aircraft coming from Mexico dropped the massive payload — which was tied to a large metal cage used to hold cargo — in a field near Brown Field Airport. The Office of Air and Marine tracked the plane as it crossed the border…the plane crossed at 4:15 a.m. and dropped the ten heavy bundles before escaping back across the border.”
An NBC Bay Area article explained that the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency’s “Office of Air and Marine spotted and tracked the plane as it crossed the border and returned to Mexico without landing.” Naturally, this made the CBP branch suspicious, so they waited to see what happened next. And, of course, with a payload like that, somebody came to pick it up. Two men, actually.
This plane originated in Mexico to deliver the skyfall to the San Diego area. Police arrested two men, a 32-year-old undocumented immigrant and a 49-year-old legal permanent resident.
What really caught my attention in this weird story is the fact that California has legal medical marijuana, which means there are dispensaries and regulated weed up and down the coastline state, so I was a tad surprised to see Mexican ganja raining down on the California terra. Sure, there is always a profit to be made when something is illegal. The black market bloats from such profits, but it seems like landing the cash cow at the border of Cali is just asking to get caught. I guess pot dealers feel it is worth the risk to transport the green to a state that has legal medical marijuana.
I also wonder how often this happens and is successful. I mean, surely this happens on a regular basis. The NBC Bay Area article even had a link to information on what to do if one sees a suspicious aircraft. I know that flying weed must happen every day, but it just seems so, well, silly to me. With all the surveillance and focus on border security, who in their right mind would think that flying weed over, dropping it from a plane, and then returning undetected would work? Even if it had worked before, surely they have their own methods for deciding when to drop the goods. How could they not notice that they had been discovered?
This just leads to so many questions. For me, the most important is how can we not see the connection between illegal weed in the US and Mexico’s cartel problems and illegal trafficking? The two men arrested were willing to risk their lives, and livelihoods likely, in order to pick up the dropped product. Why is that? Because weed is illegal in most states in the Union, but many people engage in the drug, so they get it from transfers like this one.
Just, for a minute, imagine what it would be like to see pot falling from the sky. Poor Chicken Little really would not know what to do about that. I mean, if the alleged falling sky was enough to freak him out, weed raining down on him really would mess up his mojo. Geesh, what a weird experience.
