Myths And Legends: The Mysterious Side Of Life
I imagine that most everyone has heard of some kind of myth or legend; like Bigfoot of America, Yeti of the Himalayans, Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, spirits and the list goes on. Scientist, crypto zoologists, and paranormal investigators have all tried to prove or disprove the reality of theses legends, but with no concrete evidence found, their existence is still a mystery. Even TV shows like Destination Truth, Ghost Hunters, Fact or Faked and many others have joined in the search for these elusive, but familiar myths and legends that are talked about all over the world.
Myths and legends are a distorted account of a real event of the past. Although, the origin of them is an actual event, over time the story is changed and we end up with what can be considered an unbelievable story.
Take the Legend of Sleepy Hollow for instance. It is a story of Ichabod Crane, a school teacher who is pursued by the headless horse man of Sleepy Hollow, formally North Tarrytown, New York. The name was changed in 1997. Washington Irving is the author of the story, Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The book is based on actual accounts and people of the past. Ichabod Crane was an actual person, but not a schoolteacher. He was a gunnery officer who served with Irving in the war of 1812. Ichabod’s character in the book was modeled after Jesse Merwin, a schoolteacher who hired Irving to tutor the children of politicians. The Headless Horseman’s character is based on an actual soldier who was decapitated by a cannon ball during the revolutionary war.
Even though this book is fiction, it is based on real events and people of Irving’s time and place. Every myth or legend that is told contains some truth, whether it is people, places or things.
Most of the myths and legends we hear talked about as we around the campfire or lunchtable, are familiar stories. But what about the not so familiar ones that are part of so many cultures in every region of this mysterious world we live in? These myths and legends are known by very few; mainly, the people where the story originated.
Over the course of the next several months and beyond, I am going to delve into these little know myths and legends, bringing them to life. Some will be believable; others will be so far fetched that there is no way they can be true now, or even many years ago when the story was first told.
I am not going to try to prove or disprove any of them. I will just produce the information and you can decide for yourself whether to believe it or not.
For as long as humans have been around there have been mysteries, strange creatures, myths and legends. My goal for the next several months is to bring the reader a wide variety of information concerning these little known myths and legends. There are many of these stories from all walks of life and all regions of the world.
