Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations – First 30 Minutes (Part 1)
Last night I was hanging out with a friend and we decided we wanted to play a good fighting game. So, we went on down to GameStop and picked up Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations and gave it a spin. I’m going to talk about our first 30 minutes with the game.
Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations (wow, that’s a mouthful) is a 3D fighting game developed by CyberConnect2. It is the third title in the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series and revolves around Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga universe. The story mode revolves around the entire series from the beginning of Naruto, up until the Five Kage Summit arc. The game features 72 characters from Part I, as well as Part II, with different incarnations for ninja that changed between the two parts, hence the name “Generations.” The game also features over 60 minutes of original animation from Studio Pierrot, the animation studio behind the Naruto anime series.
Now I get to talk about my experience with the game. We were actually very excited to play this because the graphic style is amazing and the gameplay is really intense. I had already played the demo of the game, so I let my friend Oscar get his bearings and play the first fight in the story mode. I’m not going to talk about the plot, since it isn’t that important in this game. It IS a fighting game, after all.
The story mode is separated into many different paths, each following the perspective of a certain character. There’s one for Young Naruto, Part II Naruto, Sasuke, and so on. Oscar jumps right on into the first fight of Young Naruto’s story, pitting him against his sensei Kakashi.
The gameplay in this game isn’t quite like any other fighting game out there. It bears a slight resemblance to the Dragonball Budokai Tenkaichi games, but they feel completely different. It places two characters within one of over 30 circular arenas, where you have a complete 360 degrees of motion. Attacks are performed in combos by repeatedly pressing B, with variations thrown in by tilting the left stick different directions. The A button is used to jump, and when used in conjunction with the left stick, allows the character to perform a stylish leaping dodge in any direction. X makes the character throw a small projectile, used to open the enemy up to attack or stop combos. Y does a chakra load, and when it is followed up by any of the other face buttons, it causes the character to perform a more powerful version of whatever action they take, at the expense of chakra energy. It allows the player to close in on an enemy quickly, throw a huge ninja star, or use a special ninjutsu attack. There are still way more variations on this fighting formula, but those are the basics.
So Oscar takes a massive beating from Kakashi and his Lightning Blade attack as he slowly learns how to play the game. His strategy most consisted of spamming the special jutsu and squealing about how great the graphics were. Deciding he’d had enough, we moved onto the VS. mode.
