Porsche Plug-In Hybrid To Be Unveiled

Porsche has always been thought of as a performance brand of vehicle with superior handling, quickness, and style being part of this sports car’s heritage. For the last two years, a Porsche has won awards in the World Performance Car competition. However, the German car manufacturer has also gone green.

On April 21, 2013 a Porsche Panamera plug-in hybrid will be unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in China. This four-door vehicle will be the first plug-in hybrid from Porsche that features a gasoline engine and an additional power source. The price tag for the new Panamera will start at $99,000.

Although the Panamera was built primarily for the Chinese market, Calvin Kim, Porsche spokesman said the model would be available in the US also. The Panamera, with its new power plant, has also seen some versions with a larger wheelbase that makes the new Panamera six inches longer than the base model. It has also undergone body revisions for tighter lines, contours, and enhanced comfort,

The electric motor has 95 hp and the 3.0-liter V6 alternate power source pushes out 415 hp. When using just the electric power source it will have a 20-mile driving range with a top speed of 84 mph. The actual range may vary, depending on driving conditions, terrain, and whether or not the a/c or heater is being used. When using the gasoline-powered engine, the zero to 60 times are 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 167 mph.

Another model of the Panamera features a 3.0-liter V6 with twin turbo chargers. This engine package replaces the 4.8-liter V8 giving it 20 extra hp and 15 more lb-ft of torque.

Fuel efficiency has not been released as of yet. With the integrated on board charging system using the universal charger, it takes approximately two and a half hours to reach a full charge when using the 240V power source.

When desired, the electric motor can work simultaneously with gasoline engine for extra hp. This is done when a kick-down switch in the throttle pedal is activated. The Panamera also offers a coasting feature during higher speeds when the gasoline engine is turned off the momentum from the vehicle will generate electricity that is stored in the lithium-ion battery.

A Porsche Car Connect app is available for mobile devices using Android or iOS operating systems. The functions of this app are remote access to the vehicles information, climate control, and a charge system indicator.

Porsche also offers some safety and convenience features on the new Panamera. An enhanced cruise control where the system warns the driver of a sudden decrease in following distance and will automatically apply the brakes and a camera based lane departure warning system is also available.
