Prank Caller’s Paradise: The “Pay-As-You-Go-Phone” App

The App Store and Crank Yankers made sweet sweet love, and the outcome was a handy app with a number of uses!

I don’t know if I should be admitting this publically, but I absolutely loved crank calling people as a kid; my friends and I would stay up late into the wee hours of the morning crank calling all sorts of people from old teachers, to news stations, and doctors offices. We even recorded them, and posted them online until we got caught, but that’s a story for another day.

Enter my most recent finding on the App store: Burner.

Founder & CEO of Ad Hoc Labs, Greg Cohn, wanted a way to provide cellphone users with the ability to maintain anonymity at their leisure without the hassle of buying a pay-as-you-go phone.

The critics will say that Burner is for criminals or dope dealers, but it’s got it’s legitimate uses, aside from crank calls.

Ladies, say you’re giving your phone number to a cute guy at a bar after a few drinks, and you don’t want to give them a fake number, but you don’t want to give him the ability to stalk you either, BAM, give ‘em your burner number; or say you’re a CraigsList merchant, and you don’t want random folks to have your personal info, BAM, burner number.

It’s a pretty sweet deal.

Basically, for $2 you can get yourself a workable phone number with a local area code that you can use for a week or 20 minutes of talk time, whichever comes first. And if you’re done with it, you can delete it — or burn it — at any time. If you need a burner number for a longer period of time, you can buy additional numbers through the app or extend your existing numbers.

To buy numbers or extend them, you purchase credit packs. A three-credit pack will get you a number and the aforementioned seven days and 20 minutes of talk time usage. An eight-credit pack is $4.99, a 15-credit pack $7.99, and a 25-credit pack costs $11.99. Doing the math, $12 will get you 8 different numbers … or you can keep a number indefinitely by adding credits to it to extend the talk time and length of time it’s active.”

You can even have multiple burner numbers!

One for the bar flies, one to deter the craigslist killers, and one for crank calling.

Instead of going through the trouble of buying three pay-as-you-go mobile phones, stealthily making calls and handing out numbers, and then ditching the phone once the deed is done, you can download the app, make the calls, and burn the numbers when your done; easy as pie.

The uses are only limited by the consumers’ imagination and needs, and in an era when anonymity is important, but often difficult to achieve, Burner provides you with the tools of the trade to be a phone wielding ninja like secret agent.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to whip out your iPhones, slide over to that glossy blue icon, and download the coolest thing since Angry Birds, and start doing whatever it is you do that requires you to be stealthy.

Best of luck double o zero. This blog will not self-destruct. (Hopefully!)
