Red Wine Supplements No Magic Potion

Although there was early promise in several animal studies regarding red wine supplements back in the day, recent studies show that the supplements of these antioxidants found in red wine don’t actually help when it comes to the heart health of obese men. It doesn’t improve their insulin sensitivity, either, which is how the body effectively uses insulin altogether.

The aforementioned study was spearheaded by Dr. Morten Poulsen from Denmark’s Aarhus University Hospital where researchers studied 24 healthy obese men and made them take a daily dose of 1,500 milligrams of resveratrol or an inactive placebo for a month. In the end, the results showed that there wasn’t any difference in the blood pressure, blood fat, cholesterol or insulin sensitivity in the group of men who took the supplements.

Because of this, experts say that, while red wine might be beneficial to people who eat healthily and exercise regularly, placing it in a pill won’t solve the problem for people who aren’t exactly very healthy to begin with.

Dr. Vivian Fonseca, the American Diabetes Association’s president of science and medicine wasn’t very surprised that this study didn’t reveal any benefits in resveratrol supplements, though. Besides, the first animal studies done on resveratrol were hyped up far too much, in general, so this study is a good way to put those former studies to rest.

Now, while it may be true that red wine supplements aren’t exactly effective, researchers say moderate alcohol consumption, most of all in the form of red wine, can still be beneficial for the majority of people out there.

People who are at risk for diabetes also have the option to take preventive measures. The most important thing, though, would be to get screened for it first. In general, the people who are at high risk for diabetes are those who are 45 years old or older. However, younger people may be at high risk for diabetes if they are overweight, as well.

To reduce the overall risk for diabetes, it would be ideal to reduce your calorie intake on a daily basis and aim to lose weight by 10% every month. To do this, you can increase your physical activity to a minimum of half an hour five times a week. Believe it or not, this simple change in your lifestyle can reduce your risk for diabetes by around 60% in just three years time and help you become a healthier person overall.

You may be looking for an easy one-stop cure-all quick fix or supplement for this, but you have to keep in mind that effective things usually require a lot of effort and work in order for them to become beneficial. So, why not make some subtle changes in your lifestyle instead and top things off with a glass or two of actual red wine? After all, red wine is already known to have great benefits because of the compounds found in it. Resveratrol aside, red wine can help improve good cholesterol. How great is that?
