Sentience of Time – Chapter XX (Part 2)
The following story is a work of fiction and is 100 percent original work. I will be publishing a chapter per week on Saturdays, which can be viewed right here on redOrbit Blogs / Sci-Fi Saturday. I have always been interested in writing science fiction and this is a step toward realizing my dreams. I hope you enjoy this serial novel a chapter at a time!
Chapter XX: The Face-Off (Part 2)
Jack stood at the door to the storefront and motioned Jazz to go inside. He thought if he could just give her a few extra moments, she could make the jump home while he held off the forces.
Jazz ran to the spot where the initial sending occurred. The floor was still darkened from her earlier event. She stood and waited. She looked on as Jack stepped out from the door and farther on to the sidewalk. She heard the police in the background ordering him to his knees.
She kept her eye on Jack as he knelt down. Just as the cops surrounded him she felt the warmth of the light begin to emanate from above. Jazz knew this was going to be close. She turned her attention to the area above her. The light started to filter down over her. She looked back and saw Cobi now approaching Jack.
“You’re too late,” Jack shouted to Cobi with a big grin. “You’re too late!”
Cobi walked up to Jack with his sidearm held on him. He motioned for the other officers to approach and cuff Jack. He looked up toward the store and saw light filtering out around a figure, which he knew was Jazz. “I’m not too late, I am just in time.”
Cobi raced to the door and peered inside. The light was nearly surrounding Jazz and he knew he had seconds to make his move. He through his gun on the floor and darted toward Jazz.
“Noooo,” Jazz hollered out. “Please, hurry!” She held her arms out to try to stop Cobi from pushing her from the light.
As Cobi approached, Jazz’s arms blocked an initial attempt to ram her from the light and he fell to the side. The light began encircling Jazz and she knew she the force field would enclose her any moment.
Cobi moved to his feet and reached for his gun before realizing he had already threw it to the ground by the door. As he tried to grab hold of Jazz, he heard the orders of the other officers for both him and Jazz to freeze.
Jazz grabbed Cobi by the shirt sleeve and tried to force him back to the ground. But as she reached out of the circle of light to force Cobi down, he was able to pull her as well, causing her to lose her footing and step out of the light altogether. A loud burst of light shot out from the center, and they both knew it had to happen now.
Cobi kicked Jazz and then pushed her, further causing her to lose her balance and fall. As one of the officers approached the light, Cobi jumped around and into the light.
Jazz looked up and cried out, “Noooo!” She tried to jump to her feet, but as the light encased Cobi she knew it was too late. The force field had encapsulated Cobi and any moment the light would zap him out of existence of the past.
The one officer tried to break through the light and grab Cobi, but once the force field went up, it was all over. As the light grew more intense, a final burst of thunderous light shot through the floor and everything disappeared. The officer stood watching in horror as Cobi was no longer there. Jazz curled into a ball and began crying. Jack was standing outside in handcuffs, watching in disbelief.
The officer turned his attention to Jazz. “Miss, lay on the floor face down now,” he ordered.
Jazz wiped her eyes and looked up at the officer. The only thing that caught her attention was his badge: P L A T T 6 6 8 7.
