Stepping Out Of The Darkness

Psychological disorders are quite common around the world; The Kim Foundation states that about “57.7 million people” are diagnosed with a mental illness.

There are so many different types of mental disorders, from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to suicidal tendencies.  Some people are lucky to just have one disorder, but it does not mean it should be ignored.

People these days can have more than one disorder. For example; I am one of those that have suffered from OCD, ADD, eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia/binge), suicidal thoughts and tendencies, and Recovering Self Harmer for about five years, some for much longer. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in October. Having these mental illnesses are tough, they take over your life and you have to relearn how to live with them.

I am also on medical leave from school because I was bullied and things got really bad. So here I am, learning how to cope with everything that life has thrown at me.

You can be sitting by someone in class, working with a co-worker, or maybe even your best friend has a mental disorder and you might not ever know about it. We can hide these illnesses quite well sometimes, depending on the disorder. We do not like having others finding out about our health and behavior, afraid that someone might leave us or that there is no point in getting help, because we are not fixable.

We feel hopeless almost all the time. We have our good days and bad days. Being patient and staying strong for others and ourselves can be difficult but look at it this way: we become stronger because of what we have been through.

I never asked for help. Never. It was hard to, but I knew that if I wanted to get better, then asking for help could not be so bad after all. I have seen several counselors and physiatrists, and have been to a few hospitals. I used to think that they were the bad people; they were going to tell on me or send me away. I took my chance and went. I am glad I did. They are not bad people out to get you, they want to help you.

You cannot be afraid to ask for help, even though it may seem scary or impossible, but you are not alone. There are millions of us out there. Asking for help is normal.

So if there is anyone out there feeling like this, know that you are not alone, that there is help out there and you do not have to feel like you are being taken over by this dark shadow. Learn how to cope and deal with your illnesses, do not hide anymore.

Be strong. You have to want to help yourself. Then start asking others for it. Do not be embarrassed. You are only human. It will get better. It just takes some time. You may not believe it right now, but trust me, I have been there and done that.
