Director Jon Shenk’s recently released movie, The Island President is a story about Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, a nation of islands composed of 1200 coral islands off of the Indian sub-continent, of which 200 are inhabited. The Maldives are filled with beautiful turquoise reefs, beaches and palm trees.

But despite its idyllic appearance, the country is threatened by an unrelenting adversary: the rising ocean. Considered the lowest lying country in the world, the Maldives will be rendered virtually uninhabitable by a sea level rise of a mere three meters. Unless dramatic changes are made to combat climate change by the nations of the world, the 1200 islands of the Maldives may disappear.

The Island President documents Nasheed’s fight to save his country.

Here is the dramatic trailer for the movie.
