Tomb Raider Reboot Sells 4 million Copies!!!
Fans of the Tomb Raider series can look upon Square Enix now with a salute of appreciation and honor because it has been revealed that the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot sold over four million copies, which would likely mean the profits from the game would be somewhere well over 200 million dollars! 456 fans rejoice!!!
I wasn’t much of a Tomb Raider junkie in the 90s, likely because I didn’t have a badass Playstation to rock it on. Instead, Pokemon and Halo would cloud my transition to the series on a Sony console, and I would never know about Laura Croft or the adventures that the character has been on in her adolescence. Thankfully for Square Enix, the 2013 reboot put her exploits in stark perspective for me.
I’ve covered the review for Tomb Raider before, and nothing has changed about how impressed I am by the game since then. Yes, even months after I’ve purchased the game for an incredible $12.59 on Steam!
Unfortunately, Tomb Raider failed to meet Square Enix’s expectations as an HD reboot, of which most of us drew large question marks above our heads. Three million copies sold across three different platforms is no matter to oversee, yet I feel that these guys really missed the big picture in their evaluation of this wonderful game! Taking risks and putting your chips into gigantic AAA titles isn’t something that most publishers are comfortable with, but that doesn’t mean that this mode of option is the ideal one.
They’re trying as hard as they can to give us newer experiences, but the global economy has taken its dramatic toll on the gaming industry as a whole. Realtime Worlds and THQ are no longer with us, and some of the downfalls that have occurred in the last 5 years have seen to the sinking of some much beloved exclusives and third party titles. As the experiences of those games fade into memory’s past; instead we have to look forward to the future of Square Enix, the future of the series, and the future of the game’s relationship with fans and newcomers.
I was one of those newcomers, and I definitely felt that I’d missed out on a great series when I booted up the PC release of Tomb Raider. The game ran just flawlessly; with not a single glitch or game crash, I’d experienced a 12 hour straight long campaign with ancient Chinese clay samurai and desperate hairy mercenaries. Not only did the game cast a female lead into a AAA at a time when such a risk could threaten the livelihood of the studio, but they also told an emotionally gripping and unbelievable tale of a lonely orphan kid that grew up to battle with the same monsters that her parents put her to sleep with.
