We Can Do Better Than Bangkok And The Biebs

As 2013 draws to a close, Instagram is revealing its most popular images.

The Most-Instagrammed Locations of 2013 include popular landmarks like Times Square, Disneyland, Central Park, Dodger Stadium, Disney World and Staples Center. But topping the list is the Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok, Thailand.

That’s right, kids — of all the beautiful locations on this mortal coil that people could capture on Instagram, the most popular place people share pics of is a friggin’ shopping mall.

Oh, the humanity.

We have how many natural wonders in this world? We have beautiful architecture, gorgeous nature scenery, famous statues, historical monuments and feats of creation. The Great Wall of China. The Colosseum (NOT the one at Caesar’s Palace in Vegas), the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower; all are Instagram-worthy beyond measure. Yet, none was able to capture the top spot.

Instead, people Instagrammed photos of a shopping mall. Now don’t get me wrong, it looks impressive and it must be rather posh and fancy to deserve monikers such as “The Pride of Asia” and “The Pride of Bangkok”- depending on which websites they choose to quote. But the fact remains that it is, indeed, a shopping mall.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not hating on malls or the people who frequent them. I love an IMAX theatre, some great bargains at Wet Seal, and a Mrs. Fields cookie as much as anyone else.

I was just shocked that a mall was the Most-Instagrammed location of 2013. I feel like we should be doing more than hanging out at Brookstone trying out all the gadgets or cruising the food court with our besties to catch up on the latest hot gossip.

As if that wasn’t disappointing enough, the Most-Liked Instagram of 2013 really elicited a groan from me, followed by a few choice invectives. A photo of pop star Justin Bieber and actor Will Smith racked up 1,496,070 “likes,” making it the most popular photo of the year.

No disrespect to either The Fresh Prince or The Biebs, but come on. For reals? They’re not even doing anything interesting in the photo! Will has his arm around Justin and is throwing deuces, while The Biebs looks as though he is wondering if the ill-fitting trucker hat and gold chain he’s wearing give him street cred. This is the image that pops into my head when I think about “straight up thug realness.” Not.

I’m just saying that in addition to supporting things like the Biebs and Will photo, we should all be celebrating the awesomeness of our own lives and capturing our own adventures. I personally feel like I’ve won the lottery when anything I post on Instagram gets more than 20 likes.

Why can’t the most popular pic of the year be of someone who has stood up for someone, created something, started a movement and contributed something of value as a real person, a civilian? That’s much better that than candid moments between mega-millionaires.

Come on, citizens of Earth – we can all do better. Let’s all put forth a concerted effort so that next year, we wont be honoring malls and millionaires. We’ve got to get to grammin’, folks, so get on it.

After all, your lunch isn’t going to Instagram itself, now is it? Oh, you try a different filter on that. And don’t forget to tag people.
