Yellowberry – Age Appropriate Lingerie
Megan Grassell is an 18-year-old high school senior from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Until recently, she was your typical teenager, worried only about grades and boys and her upcoming move to college.
According to Lingerietalk, that all ended last year when she took her little sister, Mary Margaret, shopping for her first bra.
“I couldn’t believe the bras that she was supposed to buy,” Megan said. “The choices for her, and for all girls her age, were simply appalling to me. They were all padded, push-up and sexual. Not only that, they did not fit her body properly, which automatically made me wonder ‘Where were the young, cute and realistic bras for girls?’ There were none!”
Megan decided that someone needed to do something about that, and it might as well be her. As the mother of a girl child, I fully agree and wish that she had been around 10 years go with this idea.
“It was literally like an epiphany,” Megan told Lingerie Talk this week. “I was holding a bra in my hands and I just said, ‘This is not okay. I’m going to make bras for girls.’”
She started working with a local seamstress to create prototypes, and started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for production. Megan hoped to raise $25,000 to launch her company, Yellowberry. Thirty days later, the campaign had raised almost $42,000—making it one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns for an underwear or lingerie start-up.
Megan and Yellowberry are “Changing the bra industry for young girls” by fighting back against the hyper-sexualized commercial environment that girls face every day.
“Yellowberry will be different because at the core of the company what we want to do is sell a bra in a non-sexy way,” Megan said. “In lingerie, that’s a new idea.”
“For those girls aged 11 to 15 the options they have to buy are for the most part overly sexual. They need a different bra that doesn’t scream ‘sex’.
“You shouldn’t have to buy a sequined push-up bra when you’re 13. You shouldn’t have to feel pressured to look a certain way.”
Yellowberry bras come in two styles (Tiny Teton and Tweetheart) and four colors. The bras are made from a cotton-spandex blend that is soft and metal-free. They are priced at about $40 each, and as of the time of this writing, the first production run was completely sold out.
Each bra also comes with one of six “mantras” printed on the hangtags. These were written years ago by her grandparents after the death of Megan’s little sister Caroline, who fell from a moving float during a parade. Megan hopes that the mantras (‘Water the flowers everyday’. ‘Watch quietly and observe’. ‘Find a hug when you need one’. ‘Go barefoot’. And finally, ‘Campfires are rare; eat as many marshmallows as you can’) will encourage young women to celebrate their youth instead of feeling rushed to grow up.
“These statements help reiterate the values behind my simple goal: build a bra that is unique, colorful and young made for all girls who love and enjoy their youthful, yellow stages in life.”
Megan named her company Yellowberry as a symbol of her idea that young girls need to be nurtured during this time in their lives, not sexualized.
“Think about a berry before you pick it,” Megan said. “It’s still yellow. It’s not yet ripe. It has to go through certain stages until it is ripe. And you can’t rush those stages because they are what will eventually create a beautiful berry.”
This resourceful and compassionate young woman heads off to college next spring, and personally I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
